Hogwarts Castle in Van Gogh Starry Night Style — Print & Oil Painting

The paint stands proud of the surface. Every stroke has been loaded and left where it fell, so the sky is built from hundreds of short curved ridges of ultramarine and cobalt that catch the light physically, with the yellows sitting on top of them as raised beads. This is a picture you could half read with your fingers.

The borrowing is open and complete: this is The Starry Night, redrawn. A crescent moon burns inside a broad ring of yellow at the upper right, the stars are each given a halo of their own, and a great spiral of cloud turns through the middle of the sky exactly where Van Gogh put one. Where his canvas had a village under the hills, this one has the school.

The castle is drawn purely in outline, blue contours on a bare black ground: towers, pitched roofs, one tall spire at the left, and the viaduct crossing the lower third on its round arches. The windows are single yellow dashes, dozens of them, and they are the only lighting the building gets.

At the bottom the lake takes over, worked in short blue dashes, with small boats sitting on it in silhouette, a lantern above each and a broken yellow reflection dropping beneath. The black left bare between the strokes does as much work as the paint does. From our Harry Potter collection.
