Cherry Blossoms Framing Mount Fuji and a Path — Print & Oil Painting

The path takes up more room than anything else. A broad sunlit track of ochre and cream fills the entire bottom third, painted in short broken strokes that catch the light, and it climbs gently to a low wooden fence where the land stops and the water begins.

Standing at that fence with his back to us is a single small figure in a pale coat, looking out across the lake. No one else appears anywhere in the frame, and he has been placed roughly a third in from the left rather than dead centre, so the composition never settles into symmetry.

Blossom enters from the top right on a heavy dark branch and again from the left at knee height, painted in thick white and cream dabs with orange centres. Between the two clusters the mountain sits in the middle distance, blue-shadowed under a bright cap, and a tiny white sail crosses the water beneath it.

On the right a timber building with an orange tiled roof leans into the frame and gives the scene an inhabited edge. Part of our Japan collection, alongside the sunset canvas, where the same lake is seen at the other end of the day.
