About this artwork

The centre of this tall canvas is almost empty. A pale wall of mist runs from top to bottom straight through the middle, and the rock has been pushed out to the edges: a bank of sandstone on the left, a larger mass climbing the right side, and only the vaguest further cliffs floating in the haze behind.

That emptiness is the borrowed idea. Ink wash painting builds space out of unpainted ground, and although this is worked in opaque paint with a visible bristle mark, it follows the same logic: the further away something is, the less of it gets stated.

The rock itself is described with care. Horizontal bedding lines run through the ochre stone, pines cling to every ledge in dark clumps, and at the bottom left a stream drops through boulders in a rush of pale water. The palette barely leaves grey-green and sand.

Nothing in the image names a place, so it is best read as weather, stone and distance rather than as a map. From our Japan collection, next to the armoured figure sitting in a comparable fog.
