About this artwork

A dark tiled eave cuts across the upper right corner, heavy and close, and it is the only hard-edged form anywhere here. Everything to the left of it dissolves: golden trees, white fog, a pale field of light with no horizon in it at all. The building shelters one corner of the canvas and the weather takes the rest.

Under the eave a man sits in profile on a low stool at a long plank table, facing away into the mist. He wears lacquered plate armour over a grey robe printed with white blossom, the plates picked out in gold and black lacing, and his hair is tied up in a topknot. The head is slightly bowed.

On the table: a metal pot with a thin thread of steam rising off the spout, two small cups, a shallow tray. That thread of steam is the one moving element in the image, and it has been placed at the centre of the empty half, so the eye keeps going back to it.

The colour is almost entirely gold, grey and black, with the armour supplying the only dense dark. From our Japan collection, alongside the cliffs and waterfall painted in a comparable fog.
