About this artwork
The format does half the work. This is a letterbox, well over twice as wide as it is tall, the proportion of a cinema banner, and there is simply no room in it for a body. What fits is a head, one shoulder and an arm, and the head is screaming.
The mouth is open at full stretch, wide enough to show the lower teeth, the tongue and the dark of the throat behind it. The detail that decides the whole reading is the eyebrows: they are up, not down. Down would have been rage. Up makes it panic, and panic in this creature is far worse company.
The eyes are pale blue with the whites showing all the way round, and they are aimed straight down the lens. There is no second figure in the frame for him to be shouting at, which leaves only one candidate.
The arm reaches away to the right along the length of the picture, thin, knobbed at elbow and wrist, and the fingers run out of the frame before they close on anything. The ground behind is a near-black blue carrying dozens of small pale specks, like dust or spray caught in a beam.
Two voices share that head and argue constantly, and this is a portrait of the loud one with the floor. From our Lord of the Rings collection, beside the same face when the other voice is talking.
