About this artwork
The horns are the design and everything else is fitted around them. Two enormous ribbed masses leave the temples, sweep outward and down in a full curve past the jaw, and come back up to points at the bottom corners of the frame, so that they enclose the head like a pair of brackets. They are matt, dull and dark, ridged along their whole length, and they are the only parts of the animal that are not on fire.
Between them the face is opened. The jaws are spread wide on a throat that runs from deep orange at the lips to a white heat at the back, with irregular pale fangs curving inward, and above the mouth two narrow eyes glare out as slits of the same white. The skull between the eyes is a mass of dark hide and short spines, and it does not look grown so much as cast.
On top of the head, fire. A crown of flame rises straight out of the crest in yellow and orange tongues and streams back behind the shoulders, and the air all around the creature is full of sparks at every size, from grit to fat blobs of light, crossing the frame in an upward drift. Measured saturation for this piece is among the highest in the whole collection.
The rendering is hard and modern, closer to a sculpted digital model than to brushwork: the horn surfaces have specular highlights, the sparks are individually lit, and the background falls off into a red-black gradient with no detail in it at all. It is the exact opposite treatment to the smoke-and-shadow version of the same head elsewhere in this collection.
The crown of fire is not an invention. When the thing comes out onto the bridge in the text, what is described is a mane that catches light and blazes out behind it as it draws itself up, and the flame is presented as something the creature wears rather than something it stands in. This picture has taken that one sentence and built the whole head on it. From our Lord of the Rings collection, next to the same head painted almost out of existence and those eyes looming over a very small opponent.
