About this artwork
The wingspan is the measurement the picture is built on. It opens across virtually the whole width of the frame, one membrane reaching almost to the left edge and the other almost to the right, and underneath that span stands a single small figure on top of a wall with his back to us. Nothing has happened yet and the arithmetic is already finished.
The animal hangs rather than dives. Its neck is lowered and curved so that the head comes down to the height of the figure, the jaws are slightly parted, and the body is carried on wings drawn taut and not beating. It is hovering, which is far more patient and far worse.
The exposure is the real subject. The figure is standing on top of a broad stone parapet, in the open, not behind it, in a green-grey cloak with the hood down. There is nowhere on that wall to be.
Below and beyond spreads a ruined city of pale stone: broken colonnades, roofless halls, the stumps of towers going back the better part of a mile, all of it drained of colour. The far distance is dark mountain with one band of red fire along the horizon at the left, and above it a cold cloud ceiling. The measured saturation is very low, so the picture is essentially grey with a single red line in it.
The winged mounts of the nine were kept for exactly this work: covering a wide space, slowly, looking for one small thing. Part of our Lord of the Rings collection, beside the same animal alone against a night sky.
