Two temperatures pressed against one another, and nothing else in the frame at all. The ground behind her is a warm brown-gold haze scattered with small white specks; the hood and cloak covering three quarters of her body are a cold pale blue-grey. That single opposition is the entire design and the picture needs no other event.

There is no hard edge anywhere on this surface. Hair into cheek, hood into shadow, figure into background: every transition has been blended out, so the whole thing has the airbrushed softness of a plate printed on satin, with the drawing kept deliberately light underneath.

The hood is up but pushed back off the forehead, which turns it into a frame. It makes a pale arch around the face, and the golden hair spills out of it in long crimped waves down the front of one shoulder, keeping most of the light in the left half of the picture.

She looks back over the shoulder at us and the mouth carries the faintest smile. The circlet on her brow is described in two thin lines and a single point, which is all it needs.

The Lady of the Golden Wood keeps one of the three rings and is remembered, by everyone who leaves her country, mostly as light. A portrait that banks a warm dark behind her and then dresses her in the one colour refusing to join in has understood the assignment.
