About this artwork
The odd thing about this version is the colour of the air. It is violet. Not black, not smoke grey: a genuine plum and magenta haze fills the upper half of the canvas and sits behind both figures, and it makes the orange of the creature look hotter and the whole cavern look far larger than any of the other treatments of this subject manage.
The bridge is the second surprise. It curves across the lower right of the frame as a broad pale span, and its stone is split by a network of fissures that glow cyan from below, as though something cold were burning under the masonry. That cold light and the blue-white star at the top of the staff are the only two things in the picture that agree with each other.
The whip is present and it is not the main event. It appears as a loop of banded orange light at the lower left, coming out of the dark below the creature's arm and curling up toward the span, drawn thin and bright and given a hard glow at the edge. It has a good deal further to travel.
The figure stands square on the crown of the arch with a staff raised in the right hand and a sword out level in the left, robes and hair blown back by the heat. He is painted small but not tiny, and he is the only vertical thing on the bridge.
The whip is the detail that matters, because it is what actually decides the encounter. The span breaks under the creature and it falls, and the wizard has already turned to go when a lash comes up out of the dark and takes him around the knees and pulls him in after it. The picture is aimed exactly at the seconds before that.
