About this artwork
The format is a banner, long and shallow, and every part of that width has been given something to do. The creature stands on the left in full length, the man stands at the right, and the entire space between them has been given to one continuous line of fire drawn like a signature: the whip leaves the outstretched hand, runs out across the middle of the frame, doubles back on itself in two open loops and finishes in a curl near the lower right. It is one unbroken stroke of light on a dark ground, closer to a long exposure of a moving lamp than to painted flame.
Because the picture is wide, the animal can be shown entire for once. It stands on two legs with the weight forward, a heavy shoulder and a horned head lowered, wings of ragged flame lifted behind, and a body of blackened crust split by rivers of orange that run down the thighs to a pair of dark hooves planted flat on the bridge.
Behind both of them the hall has been drawn as flat architecture: a row of enormous rectangular piers receding into the dark, each one carrying a narrow vertical slot of orange light. It reads as a colonnade lit from behind, and it gives the space a measurable depth that the fire alone would not have provided.
The figure at the right is small, pale and lit from within his own hand. A hard white star burns at the head of the staff, throwing a rim onto the hat and the shoulders and a short cast onto the stone underfoot, and a thin blade is held out low in the other hand. The bridge itself runs the width of the canvas as a dark band, cracked through in one place.
The narrowness of that span is not decoration. It was cut that way on purpose, so that any enemy taking the hall would have to cross it in single file, and the defence built by the miners of that city ends up providing the stage for the one fight it could not have anticipated.
