About this artwork
The picture is about a property line. The small one stands on his own doorstep with his hands behind his back, framed by a round green door. The tall one stands below him on the public path with a staff in his fist, on the far side of the flowerbeds. Neither has crossed. The entire scene is a negotiation about a threshold and nothing has been said yet.
The weather carries the story. Behind and above the pair the sky is a heavy grey storm with the light breaking through it in one place only, while the garden in front of them is in full sun, every flower and leaf and the brass on the door lit. Trouble at the back, comfort at the front, and the two of them standing on the join.
The scale has been staged like a photograph, which is what this image is: the wizard runs to nearly twice the hobbit's height, and the door, the chimney and the bench have all been sized to agree with the smaller of the two.
The detail is inventory-grade. A red-brick chimney pushes out of the turf roof, a lantern hangs beside the door, a stone pot of pink flowers sits on the path, ivy climbs the bank, and the coat is burgundy over a mustard waistcoat.
