About this artwork
A rank of helmets, and one bare head breaking it. The left half of the picture is a file of armoured elves standing shoulder to shoulder and receding away into the distance, every helm the same swept shape, every quiver carrying the same white-fletched arrows. Near the front stands one figure with no helmet at all, long pale hair loose over the armour, and the whole composition has been arranged so that the eye lands there and nowhere else.
The armour itself is worth the attention. Dark plate with a green-gold sheen over it, high shoulder pieces shaped to a point, layered skirts, bows carried across the back. Repeated forty times into the distance it stops reading as costume and starts reading as discipline.
The right half of the canvas does the opposite. No figures, almost no detail: a pale stone rampart in the near ground, a single barrel standing on it, and beyond that a vast fortress dissolving into fog, with one tower and a stretch of curtain wall still legible.
Everything is blue. Fine vertical streaks of rain cross the middle distance, the light is the flat cold light that comes before a sunrise rather than after one, and the only warmth in the picture is the faint gold caught on the armour.
No company of elves comes to that fortress in the book. The films send one, led by a march-warden out of Lothlórien, and this painting follows the films. Part of our Lord of the Rings collection, beside what is coming up the other side of that wall.
