About this artwork

The saturation measured on this file is the highest in the group by a wide margin and close to the ceiling of the scale, and one look explains it. The entire picture is a single green, pushed until it stops behaving like a colour and starts behaving like a signal. Nothing outdoors is lit this way.

The light comes from underneath and behind the buildings, so the architecture is thrown forward as silhouette while a broad column of the same green climbs out of the middle of the city and into the sky, wide enough to be seen from a long way off. It is not illumination. It is an announcement.

The building is all points. A central tower rises through the middle and splits at its crown into two prongs, and below it sit a mass of lesser spires, spiked crenellations and a long bridge of pointed arches crossing the front of the whole complex. Not one line in the design curves.

Everything else is withheld. Mountains close both sides as flat black masses, mist fills the lower quarter, and a few small windows glow in the outbuildings at the left to give the scale away.

This was a city of Gondor once and it was named for the moon. It was taken, renamed, and the light in it changed colour. From our Lord of the Rings collection, alongside the same place painted cold and unlit.
