A Lone Ship Sailing Into the Light at the Grey Havens — Print & Oil Painting

The two headlands are near mirrors of each other and the picture is built on that symmetry. Cliffs rise at the left and right, each carrying an arcaded viaduct that runs out along the rock on tall slender arches, each broken by towers and spires that grow directly out of the crag. Between them the water opens into a broad channel that runs straight back to the horizon.

At the end of that channel the sun is going down and it has been allowed to burn out completely. There is no disc, only a spreading white hole in the paper with the cliffs eaten into at their edges where they meet it, and a single path of reflected light laid down the middle of the water toward the viewer. Everything in the picture is arranged along that path.

The boat is small, dark and alone. She carries one mast and a triangular sail set full, and she is placed slightly left of the light path, perhaps a fifteenth of the width of the canvas, with her reflection under her. There is no crew visible and no second vessel anywhere on the water.

The whole thing is worked in a narrow sepia range: warm grey, buff, dust and cream, laid thin so the tooth of the support reads through in the sky. The technique is closer to watercolour and body colour than to oil, with the lights lifted rather than painted and the darks kept transparent. It gives the harbour the look of something remembered rather than seen.

The road that sail is taking stopped being an ordinary sea route a long time before this. When the world was changed and the great island went under, the way west was left open only to elven ships, which could hold a straight course out of a bent world while every other hull simply came back round to where it started. A painting that puts one small boat on a line of light and gives it a horizon made of nothing at all has understood the arrangement.
