Rohirrim Charging Across the Field at Sunset — Print & Oil Painting

They are coming straight at the viewer. Not across the frame and not away from it: the front rank fills the bottom third of the picture and every horse in it is aimed at the lens, so the composition has no exit and no safe corner. It is the most confrontational arrangement available for cavalry and the painting commits to it entirely.

The sky is cut in two along a hard horizontal. The lower half, behind the riders, is a hot cream and gold that flares out to white just above the horizon; the upper half is a solid bar of storm grey rolled across the whole width. Nothing bridges them. Every helmet and spear tip in the picture is read against that seam.

The ground is a single warm ochre, worked in long horizontal drags, and it holds no detail at all beyond the dust the horses are lifting. Against it the riders are dark: mail, round shields, conical helms with cheek plates, and a scatter of raised swords. One pale banner is up at the centre right on a long staff, streaming back over the heads.

Depth is handled by simple repetition. Behind the front rank there is a second, and behind that a third, each one smaller, dimmer and less separated than the last, until at the back the host is just a serrated line of spear points against the light. Two lines of mountain close the horizon.

What actually made this army effective was never its size. It was the fact that it could be somewhere else by morning, and that everything it owned could ride. Painting them at the moment of contact, in the last of the light, with the weather already arriving behind them, keeps that in view.
