About this artwork
The light in this picture comes off the floor. There is no window, no torch and no fire: the hoard itself throws a low gold glow upward, so every form in the hall is lit from beneath, and the underside of the dragon's jaw, the ribs of the wing and the roof of the cave all catch it while the tops of things stay dark. It is an unnatural way to light a room and it is exactly right for this one.
The animal lies rather than rears. Its body runs along the whole right half of the canvas in a red-brown coil, the near foreleg planted in the coins with the claws spread, one wing folded high behind the shoulder, and the head brought round in clean profile to face the left. A crest of horns sweeps back from the skull, the jaw is long and closed, and a pale membrane runs down the throat.
Facing all of that, at the far left, stands a single dark upright mark no taller than a coin is wide. He is placed in the one shaft of brighter light on the floor, arms at his sides, and he is not running. The distance between him and the head is about a third of the width of the picture, which is roughly the length of the neck.
The architecture is deliberately half swallowed. A ruined stair climbs at the far left with a cold green light on it, columns rise into a blackness that never resolves, and the far end of the hall is simply absent. The measured brightness of the whole canvas is very low, and the gold reads as bright only because everything around it has been given up.
What happens in that hall is a conversation. The burglar keeps his name to himself and answers in riddles, the dragon does most of the talking, and the fatal detail is one bare patch of hide that gets noticed while the flattery is going on. A picture with the two of them stationary and the whole floor glowing has understood the scene better than a picture of fire would.
