About this artwork
The sword is the only thing in this picture that is lit from inside. It stands point down at the exact centre of the canvas, a long straight blade with a raised fuller running its whole length, and that channel glows a molten red-orange from the crossguard to the tip as though the steel had been taken out of the forge and set upright in the ground. The hands resting on the pommel are barely drawn at all.
Around it the figure is a hole in the image. Black plate over black cloth, a cloak shredded into long tongues along every hem, spiked pauldrons rising to shoulder height, and above them a tall crown of tapering spikes with a narrow visor beneath it in which two faint orange sparks are the only sign of anything looking out. Almost no surface detail has been rendered anywhere on him.
The composition is close to symmetrical and deliberately static. The figure stands square to the viewer on a low ridge of broken black rock, walls of fire rise on both sides to the top of the frame, and the flames are painted in loose vertical licks of orange and yellow with sparks drifting up through them. Nothing is moving except the fire, and even that is stylised.
The palette is two colours and no more: the orange of burning and the black of the figure, with a dirty olive filling the corners where the smoke thickens. Measured saturation for this canvas is among the highest in the collection, which is unusual for a subject normally painted in greys.
He was a king once, and a living one. Nine rings went to mortal men, mostly to lords and rulers who took them for the obvious reasons, and the crown in this picture is the one he was already wearing before the bargain closed on him. Painting him as an empty suit around a burning weapon is a reasonable account of what was left afterwards.
