Iron Man Raises a Glowing Repulsor Palm — Print & Oil Painting

The picture is organised around an open hand. It is raised to head height on the left of the frame, gloved in crimson and dark plate, the fingers spread and slightly curled, the palm turned flat toward us. In the middle of that palm a small white disc is burning, hot enough to bleach the plating around it and throw a pale ring onto the inside of the thumb. Nothing else in the image is that bright.

The head above the armour is bare. No helmet, no faceplate: grey coming in at the temples, a trimmed beard along the jaw, the eyes turned away to the right and slightly narrowed. It is the face of somebody watching a situation develop rather than reacting to one, and the artist has left it in soft light while the suit below takes all the reflections.

That suit is painted as polished metal and nothing else. Crimson lacquer over the shoulders and ribs, gold panels down the flank, a triangular white lamp set into the chest, and a hard specular edge on every rounded surface. The layered plates across the abdomen are drawn one at a time.

Behind him the background is graphic rather than descriptive. A violet and indigo field is crossed by long neon lines that meet at angles, and where they cross they close into the pointed capital A of the Avengers, repeated at two or three different depths and scales. The measured hue of the whole canvas sits in the blue range with the brightness kept low, which is exactly why the red and gold read as loudly as they do.

The gesture is more literal than it looks. The discs in the palms were built as flight stabilisers before anyone thought of them as guns, which is why an Iron Man who is neither flying nor firing still holds his hand open: it is the position the machine is designed around.
