Tony Stark's Face Fused with His Iron Man Helmet — Print & Oil Painting

About this artwork
The canvas is split down the middle of a single face. On the left, a man in warm flesh tones with one brown eye open and a dark beard along the jaw. On the right, the gold faceplate of the helmet, its eye slit lit hard cyan, the mouth grille closed. The two halves meet along the centre line of the face and the artist has made no attempt to soften the join.
The handling is aggressive everywhere. Paint is dragged in broad diagonal strokes, colours are laid wet into wet without blending, and the whole surface is scored with slanting streaks of crimson, black and cadmium. Flecks of red and turquoise are flicked across the face itself, so the portrait never quite settles into a clean likeness.
Cyan is rationed and placed with intent. Thin concentric circles are drawn over the living eye like an overlay, a larger dial of rings and tick marks sits in the lower left corner, and the helmet eye burns the same colour. Those are the only cool notes in a picture otherwise built from oxblood and gold.
The background is a dark red field broken by horizontal bands and small bright rectangles that read as lit windows or instrument panels seen at speed. It is deliberately illegible, which keeps all the pressure on the head.
What has been drawn over the human eye is the point of the whole thing. He flies the machine from inside a heads up display, with targeting, damage reports and the voice of the system that runs it all projected across his vision, so his sight and the helmet's are already the same instrument. Painting the two halves as one head only removes the last few millimetres. Part of our Marvel collection, next to another face half revealed, this one set into a weathered wall and the helmet on its own in a comic style paint splash.
