About this artwork
The muzzle is aimed straight out of the canvas. Foreshortening does the rest: the arm cannon swells into the largest object in the picture, the shoulders spread behind it, and the head ends up small and high, almost an afterthought. Inside the bore sits a single bead of red light, and the whole composition funnels toward it.
This is oil, and it refuses the flat cel look the character usually gets. The helmet is modelled in silver, violet and near black with long soft highlights running over the crown; the brow jewel catches red; the face beneath it stays in shadow, features barely resolved. The plating on the cannon is glossy and slightly wet looking, closer to enamel than to a cartoon.
Behind the figure there is only ochre and black, smoke or dust, scattered with small white specks. No floor, no room, no horizon. The background exists to be darker than the metal and to let the red carry.
The arm cannon has been able to hold a charge since the fourth game of the classic series, and the shot it usually releases is yellow. Here the light in the barrel is red and nothing has been fired yet. The painting keeps the held breath and leaves the shot outside the frame.
