About this artwork
A ribbon banner crosses the bottom of the canvas carrying two enormous numerals in white with a heavy blue outline, and it takes up close to a quarter of the picture. Everything above is stacked and angled to leave that space clear, which tells you the design was built around the lettering rather than the other way round.
Five figures climb in a pyramid. At the front, low and centre, the roundest helmet of the group, grinning, both arms up. Behind and above it, a blue helmet with a jewel at the brow and a pointed crest. To the left, a helmet with round ear pods and a pale visor across the eyes. To the right, a dark red spiked crest above a red visor. At the apex, a boy with no helmet at all, brown hair pushed up, holding a translucent red lens in one gloved hand.
They are not a team. They come from different eras of the series and are drawn as a lineage rather than a squad, which is why only the figure at the front carries the silhouette most people picture when the name is said. The background helps: a black field scattered with white dots, a slab of pale green behind the group, and no setting whatsoever.
The series began in December 1987, so the thirtieth anniversary landed in 2017, and it was marked with group portraits in exactly this arrangement. What the painted version adds is texture. Brush marks are visible in the blue armour and the black ground, and the flat colour of the source style ends up sitting on a surface that is not flat at all.
