About this artwork
Everybody here has been stretched. Chins run long, necks run longer, hands are half again the size they should be, and the noses arrive well before their owners. It is caricature applied with a straight face and considerable skill, and it is why this piece looks like nobody else's.
The two figures are on a ship, up against the rail, both armed and both facing the same way. He is behind and above, in a blue coat with a red baldric, one sabre held up and back over the shoulder and the other hand spread open in front of him. She is lower and forward, red hair streaming out of a blue headscarf, one hand on a hilt at the left and the other arm thrown right with a second blade at the end of it.
They are not crossing swords with each other. Both blades point outward, away from the pair, at whatever is happening off the left edge of the canvas, and the composition is built as a wedge with the two of them at its point. Read it as a boarding party rather than a fencing match.
The best passage is the monkey. It squats on the rail at the right with a lit cigar clamped in its teeth and a thin line of smoke going up, a tiny dagger held out at arm's length, and an expression of complete confidence. Behind all three, sails and shrouds against a green and blue sky, painted in soft matt colour with the tooth of the surface showing.
