Borg Cube Firing a Beam at a Planet — Print & Oil Painting

The picture contains two curves and one straight line, and the line wins. A hard green beam leaves a glowing point high on the left face, crosses the entire body of the cube on a diagonal, and fans out below into a broad blade of light aimed at the surface underneath.

This cube is pale. Where the others in the collection are black, this one is rendered in grey and bone-white, its detail worked as a fine even grid across all three visible faces, so it reads less like a machine than like a quarried block of something. Only the beam and a faint green corrosion creeping over the right-hand face carry any colour.

It is also very low. The planet fills the bottom quarter of the frame from edge to edge, close enough that the surface reads as weather rather than geography: white cloud over blue ocean with green-brown land showing through, painted near enough to our own to make the point without stating it. A small blue-white cluster hangs at the upper left.

What that beam is doing has a name in engineering rather than in warfare. It is a cutting tool, the sort used to open a hull or a crust, applied here to a civilisation, and the complete absence of drama in the composition is the correct treatment of that.
