About this artwork
One colour runs this canvas from edge to edge. Violet in the skin, violet in the light, violet in the veins, violet in the eyes, with only a shift in value between the deepest shadow and the brightest highlight. Restricting a portrait to a single hue is a risk, and it works here because the drawing underneath is exact.
The light arrives from directly in front and slightly below, lifting the cheekbones, putting a hard bright edge along the lower lids and sinking the sockets. It is interrogation lighting, and it gives the head its aggression before any expression has been read.
Fine lines of light run out from the corners of the eyes and across the temples and cheeks, branching like frost or like veins carrying something luminous. They are the only marks that break the modelling of the face, and they have been drawn thin enough to survive at print size without turning into ornament.
The eyes themselves are pale violet-white with pupils still in them, and they look straight down the lens. The brows are pulled together, the nostrils slightly flared, the mouth closed with the corners drawn down: contempt rather than rage.
Around all of it, dark segmented tendrils crowd in from the top and both sides, out of focus, framing the head in a mass of curved black shapes. The tightest crop in our Starcraft collection. The same figure at full length in daylight shows what this head is attached to.
