Kerrigan Marches Her Zerg Horde to War — Print & Oil Painting

A clear patch of wet ground has opened in the middle of the swarm, and that gap is the composition. Scythed limbs cut in from the left edge, a hooked claw crowds the right, a heavy tusked beast rises out of the murk behind, and not one of them comes within reach of the figure standing in the middle. The horde has arranged itself around her the way a crowd arranges itself around somebody it will not touch.

The queen is painted far paler than the swarm she leads: near-white plating over the shoulders, hips and shins, gold trim along every edge, and a fall of hair rendered as blue light rather than as hair. Against the brown chitin and grey mud of everything else she becomes the one clean object in a filthy landscape, which is exactly what makes her legible from across a room.

The ground has been treated as a wet mirror, so the lower quarter of the canvas repeats the sky in broken strokes of white and orange. Above, cloud sits low and colourless with a thin band of late light along the far horizon. That light comes from behind the horde, which is why the whole line of them reads first as silhouette and only afterwards as anatomy.

Sarah Kerrigan was taken by the Swarm on Tarsonis and remade as its queen, and what the Zerg gained from her was a single mind issuing orders in place of an instinct.
