About this artwork
The head fills the frame and the crop cuts it at the collarbone, but what organises the image is the fan of tendrils. Dozens of segmented black limbs sweep out of the scalp in every direction, each jointed like a finger and tipped with a curved claw, radiating to all four edges so the face sits at the centre of a dark wheel.
The skin has had a great deal of study. Green-grey and mottled, darker blotches across the cheekbones and the brow, a network of fine veins under the surface, and a wet sheen along the jaw where pale green fluid runs down the throat and out of the bottom of the picture. It is painted as a living surface, not as a mask.
Two orange lights sit in the sockets. They have no iris and no pupil, only a hot core fading to gold at the rim, and they throw a faint warm cast onto the bridge of the nose and the upper lip. Everything else in the canvas is cold.
The mouth is the detail that unsettles. It is small, barely parted, and entirely human, with a natural colour left in the lips, untouched by whatever has happened to the rest of the head. The eyes are not human at all; the mouth still is.
Below the collarbone the anatomy turns to armour: ridged plates in dark green with the same chitin sheen, and the last of the green light draining down into them.
