Nearly all the colour has been taken out. This is the palest picture in the group and very close to the least saturated: white mist, grey armour, a low sun burning through the fog behind the figure, and violet-grey rocks that only just separate from the air around them. Nothing here is more than two steps from neutral.
The pose is theatrical and it works. He stands with the feet planted wide, one arm thrown straight up and out with a pistol at the top of the frame, the other dropped down and back with a long rifle hanging from it. Both weapons point away from the centre, which leaves the armoured torso completely open in the middle of the canvas.
That torso is where the drawing went. Rounded chest plates, a rib of vents down the sternum, a small blue lamp at the collar, segmented hip and thigh plating, and a helmet that closes over the face with no opening visible anywhere. The plate is scratched and the metal is dull.
A second soldier crouches just behind and to the left, cut off at the waist by mist, weapon raised in both hands. He has been drawn at perhaps half the detail of the man in front, which is how the depth gets built in a picture with no landscape to build it from.
The fog does everything else. It erases the ground under their feet, dissolves the rocks at both edges, and leaves the two of them standing in a white room with no walls. One of the quietest images in our Starcraft collection, and the marines unleashing firepower in the city is the same armour with the noise switched back on.
