About this artwork

The gun goes off and the whole picture answers. A cone of orange fire leaves the barrel at the centre right, brass casings arc away to the left in a spray, the shoulder rocks back, and embers are kicked up off the ground all round the feet. The recoil has been drawn with as much care as the weapon.

The firer is a marine in blue powered armour with 435 stencilled on the shoulder, braced with the legs apart and the weapon carried hip-high. A second, smaller figure in dark armour fires from the left edge, half turned away. Those two are the entire terran presence.

What is missing is the horde. There is not one Zerg creature in the frame: what stands in for them is the ground, overgrown with black spines and low ridges from edge to edge, and a mass of the same spikes rising at the right where the fire is going. The enemy is off-frame, and the painting fights it anyway.

The colour scheme is two greens and a fire. Olive haze in the sky, black-green rock underfoot, and then the orange of the muzzle flash with a scatter of embers in the bottom right corner. Nothing else is permitted to be warm.

The brushwork stays loose everywhere except the armour, which is drawn tight with panel lines, hazard markings and a cyan lamp at the collar. Part of our Starcraft collection, next to the heavy and the marksman storming the same kind of ground, which repeats the suit and the stencilled number.
