About this artwork
The whole picture is a diagram of where the force went. A cone of white opens from an outstretched palm at the centre and widens to the right edge, hard and dense where it leaves the hand, breaking into spray and torn streaks by the time it arrives. Everything else in the canvas is bent around that shape.
At the receiving end, a hunched dark figure has both arms up and is already going over backwards, its outline coming apart at the edges where the light is eating into it. You can see the moment being lost: the feet have not caught up with the shoulders and there is nothing behind it to stop against.
He is seen from behind and below, braced low with the back leg locked straight and the front knee deep, coat and hair blown out to the right by his own blast. The detail that makes the painting is in the other hand: the sword is still in it, held down and back and pointing at the ground, entirely unused.
Aard is the concussive one, a shove of raw force, and it is what a witcher reaches for when the blade is the wrong answer or when he wants a second to think. That reading is available here purely from the position of two hands.
The setting is barely painted: a burning field in the middle distance, orange along the bottom left, black smoke through the top, a few standing shapes further off. From our The Witcher collection, and the burning village seen from over his shoulder is the same night from a few paces back.
