Ciri Sits With a Wolf Spirit and a Raven — Print & Oil Painting

Three heads come out of the dark and only one of them is human. A white wolf at the left, muzzle and one amber eye holding the light while the rest of the animal thins away into the ground behind it. A raven low at the centre, blue-black and in full profile. And above the two of them, a young woman sitting on the heap all three share.

The heap is worth slowing down for, because it is made entirely of armour. A smooth grey pauldron, a barbed collar with a round boss, a gold-chased plate behind the bird, and at the right a helm with long spikes rising off it and a skull-like face turned towards the viewer, its jaw hanging open. Nothing on that pile is being worn by anybody.

She sits with one leg folded beneath her and the other knee raised, in a white blouse off both shoulders with short puffed sleeves, an embossed leather bracer on the forearm, a red-brown strap running down across the chest, a broad belt whose plates each carry a green stone, and tall ochre boots laced high. The palette around her is drained to grey-green and brown, so the gold under the raven and the blue in its feathers are the two places colour survives.

Behind her head a single thin arc of light has been drawn, a clean circle passing behind the hair and too regular to belong to anything in the room. It is the one element with no physical explanation anywhere in the frame, and it quietly turns a seated figure into an emblem.

Ciri was raised at Kaer Morhen among the witchers of the Wolf School, and a white wolf at her shoulder invites that reading without the painting ever having to state it. It hangs in our The Witcher collection; Geralt standing before a giant wolf medallion takes the same sign literally, and Eredin holding Ciri atop a pile of bones builds its heap out of the opposite outcome.
