About this artwork
Count the strokes. The entire head has been built from perhaps forty of them, most a centimetre wide, laid down once and left alone: two for the cheek, one for the jaw, three or four for the whole of the neck. Nothing has been blended and nothing has been corrected, and the economy is the pleasure of the piece.
The band across the eyes is the only patterned surface anywhere. Orange-red, woven with a pale zigzag, tied round the head and disappearing into black hair, and it sits exactly where the viewer expects to find the part of a portrait that looks back. The picture withholds that and replaces it with a strip of cloth.
Because there is nothing to meet, the pose has to carry the expression, and it does. The chin is lifted, the head tipped back and slightly toward the light, the mouth relaxed and closed. It is the posture of someone locating a sound, or turning a face up to feel where the warmth is coming from.
A single pale feather stands upright in her hair at the crown, and a ruff of white and grey plumage rises behind the shoulders against a dark red-brown garment. Behind all of it, loose cloud: warm cream and ochre on the left where the light is, cooling into slate blue on the right.
Her eyes were taken from her at Loc Muinne, and she carried on afterwards as before, which is precisely the tone this painting takes. No drama, no scar tissue, no pity: a lifted chin and a feather. It belongs to our The Witcher collection, and the courtyard confrontation with two knights shows her before that.
