Yennefer and Triss in Matching Lace Lingerie — Print & Oil Painting

The camera is directly overhead, looking straight down at a bed, and that single decision changes what kind of picture this is. With no horizon and no gravity to orient it, the composition stops being a scene and starts being a pattern: shapes laid on a surface, read the way you would read a textile.

The two figures have been arranged head to foot, one running up the frame and the other down it, so the design turns on a hundred and eighty degrees of rotational symmetry. Look at it one way and you find a dark-haired face at the top; turn the picture over and you find a red-haired one in the same position. Limbs cross the centre line in a loose diagonal lattice.

The palette is warm and low throughout. Ochre and umber bedding, a dark fur throw, brown shadow in every fold, and against all of it exactly two cool marks: black lace on one figure, dark teal on the other, the same garment cut twice in different colours. That repetition is the joke and the structure at once.

The detail budget has gone almost entirely into fabric. Fine floral lace with the pattern actually drawn rather than suggested, small satin bows at each strap, a laced panel down the front, a black band at one throat with a small round pendant, and a green stone on a chain lying against the red hair.

The two of them are the nearest thing the saga has to friends who cannot stop keeping score, and the composition makes that formal by giving each exactly half the canvas and refusing to let either have the top. It hangs in our The Witcher collection. The candlelit interior with Triss alone is the same register with one figure removed.
