Geralt's Eyes Glow Beneath a Dark Hood — Print & Oil Painting

The paint is the first thing to notice. Broad strokes laid down wet, edges left open where the artist decided they did not matter, whole areas of the cloak resolved as three or four flat sweeps of near-black. Nothing is finished except what needed to be.

What needed to be is a strip about the width of a hand: the eyes, the nose, the beard. One eye burns orange-gold under the shadow of the hood, with a red smear dragged across the socket and the cheekbone beneath it; the other stays in half-light. It is a small hot passage in a very cold picture, and the whole composition funnels toward it.

The background is a pale, scraped grey-white with a few orange flecks drifting through it, and this reversal matters: the figure is the dark shape and the world behind is the light one. White hair falls in heavy ropes on either side of the face and reads almost as bright as the ground it sits against.

At the centre of the chest, small and precise in a canvas of approximations, sits the medallion: a pale wolf head with red in its jaws, the single object given hard edges. A sword hilt rises past the left shoulder, and straps and buckles are indicated across the torso without being described.
