A sword stands dead centre and runs the full height of the canvas, and the head has been arranged behind it. That single vertical splits the face in two, hides one eye completely, and turns what would otherwise be a straightforward portrait into something closer to a heraldic device.
The engraving is the only saturated thing in the picture. A column of angular gold characters runs down the flat of the blade, with a small circular sigil set about a third of the way up, and a second line of them appears reversed at the top. They give off a faint glow that lights nothing else, which keeps the rest of the canvas as dark as it wants to be.
Behind the head, a ragged patch of white breaks through: a hole punched in a roof, or an opening at the end of a passage. Its edges are jagged and its shape is irregular, and it is the reason the silhouette of the hair and shoulders reads at all. Beyond that patch, nothing.
What survives of the face is one yellow eye, a scarred brow, and the corner of a mouth. Below, chainmail sleeves catch a little grey light, straps cross the chest, and a wolf-headed medallion hangs low with two red points where its eyes should be. That medallion is meant to shiver whenever magic is near, and the artist has quietly made it the second brightest object in the frame.
