Geralt Confronts a Red Dragon on a Ridge — Print & Oil Painting

One colour opposition carries this picture and nothing else is asked to help. The entire landscape is green: pine forest, wet grass, blue-green mountain, pale cloud. The animal is red, from crest to tail, and no red appears anywhere else on the canvas. You could describe the composition accurately as a red shape placed on a green field.

The wing is what makes it a painting rather than a diagram. One enormous membrane sweeps up from the shoulder and out into the top left corner, thinning where the light comes through it, with a pale hooked claw at the leading edge. It bridges the empty half of the sky and ties the two ends of the composition together, which nothing else in the picture would do.

The head is low and forward, horned, crested with a fan of spines, jaws parted on a double row of teeth, one eye a hard red point. The neck and chest are plated in overlapping scutes and the second wing rises black behind the body, and the whole animal is crouched with its weight on the front limbs, ready to push.

Against that, the man is about a fifth of its height. He stands lower on the slope, feet apart, weight on the back leg, the sword held out one-handed toward the head and nothing else raised. There is no heroic flourish anywhere in the pose; it is a holding position.
