About this artwork
The camera has been put on the floorboards and tilted up, and the picture is built entirely on the distortion that produces. Nearest the viewer is a bare foot, sole forward, enlarged by perspective until it occupies most of the lower half of the canvas, while the head at the far end of the same body is small enough to cover with two fingers.
The room is the reason to stay with it. A bookcase runs up the left edge with three or four shelves of spines in dull red, green and tan; on the right hangs an oval mirror in a heavy carved frame, the palest object anywhere in the image; overhead, plank boards and a beam close the ceiling in. A study assembled out of two pieces of furniture and a roof.
She sits high on a stool with turned legs, one knee drawn up and crossed over the other, holding a book at arm's length so that only its back board faces us. The sleeve of the arm holding it carries the same dark feather trim that recurs through this group, and the rest of the gown falls in black off the far side of the seat.
Her face stays mostly in shadow above the book: white skin, a dark mouth, heavy shading around the eyes, lit by whatever weak source is coming from the right. Nothing in the expression is being performed for anybody.
The title promises a sorceress reading in her study, and the reading and the study are both present; it is the viewpoint that decides how much of either you actually get to see. Filed in our The Witcher collection next to the portrait before a glowing pentagram, another interior where the figure is seated and the room is nearly dark.
