Bad Moon Ork Crushing Through Smoke and Rubble — Print & Oil Painting

Dust is the medium here. A fine grey-white powder fills the entire frame, thick enough to bleach the background figures almost out of existence, and every solid object in the picture is rimmed and softened where it meets the air.

Out of it comes the Ork. He is down on one knee and driving forward, an enormous yellow power claw swung wide to the left with its cutting edges scored and stained, a red and white chequered pauldron on the right shoulder, a snarling green face under a yellow crested helm. The armour is the colour of construction plant and about as subtle.

The detail that changes the picture is at the bottom. Under his knee lies a human soldier in olive fatigues and a steel helmet with an aquila at the collar, one bare arm still stretched out along the ground, the fingers open. He is not a marine, he is not in power armour, and he was never going to be a match for any of this.

Behind, three more greenskins in dark helmets loom half-lost in the murk, and a tattered red flag hangs off a broken pole at the upper left. The rendering is photographic in its finish, with every scratch in the yellow plate individually described.

The size of him is not artistic licence. Orks grow physically larger the longer they survive and the more they win, so authority inside a warband is settled by measurement rather than by argument: the biggest greenskin present is, by definition, the one giving the orders. This one has plainly been having a good war. Part of our Warhammer 40.000 collection, alongside a Big Boss of the same clan towering over the battle.
