Space Marine Advancing with a Blood-Stained Sword — Print & Oil Painting

White is the rarest colour in this picture and nearly all of it has been spent on one plate. The left pauldron is kept pale and clean with a black cross pattee laid across its face, and it is the only element that would still be legible at fifty paces. Everything else, helm, chest, greaves, shield, sits in charcoal and soot.

The armour is the heaviest a Space Marine wears: pauldrons wider than the skull between them, exhaust stacks rising behind the shoulders, a groin plate hung with a bronze skull and a strip of parchment. The faceplate has been sculpted into a permanent snarl, jaw grille pushed forward, two narrow eye slits lit a warm yellow, and across the sternum a gilded winged skull is worked in relief with more care than anything else in the painting.

The sword named in the title is carried low in the right fist and it is wet to the hilt. Blood runs down the blade in long strings and has already flicked back onto the white shoulder as a fine red spray. The left arm carries a broad black shield faced with a scarred cream panel; behind that shoulder a white banner hangs from a cross-headed pole, lettered in script too small to read and marked with the same cross again.

All of it stands in a fog of grey-green smoke, with one small fire burning at the lower left corner as the single warm light in the frame. The background has been kept almost featureless, which throws every tonal decision onto the armour and is why the figure reads as heavy rather than merely large.

That cross belongs to the Black Templars, and they wear it instead of a home. Raised out of the Imperial Fists, they never took a world of their own: the fleet is the Chapter, recruits are trained aboard it, and vows are sworn before a battle rather than in a fortress-monastery.
