About this artwork

There is no colour in this image at all. Not a muted palette, not one warm accent: pure black, white and the greys between, which throws the entire weight of the picture onto value and edge. It sits closer to a charcoal drawing than to anything else in the collection.

A creature crouches in profile at the centre, on all fours, back arched high and limbs folded under it at sharp angles. The proportions are wrong in a specific and deliberate way: the forearms far too long, the joints too prominent, the ribs pushing through skin that has been rendered as one wet-looking sheet.

Long straight hair hangs from the head to the ground and covers the face completely. Whether there is a face under it is never answered, and that is where most of the discomfort comes from.

Behind the figure a pale halo of light opens and is then closed off again by dark blades and branches crossing the foreground, so the thing is lit from behind and pinned in front. From our Bloodborne collection, next to the wide field of white flowers under a red moon, the collection at its opposite extreme of scale.
