About this artwork

Very little pigment has been used here. Most of the sheet is left as pale ground, and the garden behind the figure is carried by the thinnest possible washes of grey-green and ochre, allowed to bloom into one another while still wet. The picture is bright almost to the point of bleaching.

Into that pallor one saturated shape has been dropped: the kimono, a strong scarlet patterned with white and pink blossom, spreading out across the floor where the woman kneels. It is the only full-strength colour anywhere on the page and it does all the work of holding the composition together.

She is seen from behind and a little to the right, hair gathered into a bun with an ornament through it, one hand raised holding a dark bowl at the level of her chin. To her left a low wooden table carries a black teapot on a tray and a single small cup, both put in with a few dry strokes.

A dark post and a screen close the left edge, and beyond the veranda a tiled roof floats in mist above a pond. Part of our Japan collection, next to the dusk treatment at the pagoda pond, which takes the same subject into shadow.
