About this artwork

A wooden rowing boat lies across the foreground, empty, bow pointing left, its hull built from long parallel strokes of ochre and brown that follow the planking. A second, smaller boat floats just behind it. Nobody is in either one, and the absence is the source of the stillness.

The water takes up nearly half the canvas and is the most worked passage in it. Deep blue has been laid down in horizontal bands and then dragged over with broken streaks of white and pale grey, so the surface reads as faintly disturbed rather than flat, with the mountain's light spilling straight down the middle of it.

Above the shoreline the far bank is a dense dark green, the mountain rises in white and blue with a heavily loaded snow cap, and towering white clouds occupy the sky on the left. The whole upper register is cool.

Warmth is confined to two places: an autumn tree at the right edge and a patch of yellow-orange grass among grey rocks in the bottom corner. From our Japan collection, where the lake crossed by three white birds keeps the same water and empties it of objects.
