About this artwork

The bottom third is nothing but dry grass, painted in long upward flicks of yellow, ochre and green with a narrow track worn through it. All that grass is where the depth comes from: the eye has to cross it and follow the track before it is allowed to reach the water and the mountain.

The cottage is what the title notices and it earns the attention. Its thatch is built from thick horizontal ridges of ochre laid one over another with a pale crest along the ridgeline, and behind it a cluster of smaller roofs suggests a village without a single door or window being drawn.

On the lake a small orange boat carries one figure in white, no bigger than a fingernail, and that scrap of paint sets the scale for everything else, the mountain included, which fills the upper half in blue shadow and hard white snow.
