About this artwork
The composition is one long diagonal and it is coming downhill. The creature occupies the upper left corner and drives across the canvas toward the lower right, head first, forelimb extended, wings of ragged flame trailing behind it, and the figure it is aimed at stands at the end of that line on the right with a black gulf underneath him. Nothing in the picture is level.
The animal has been painted as a crust over a furnace. The body is dark and broken into plates, and between the plates the paint runs to a molten yellow-orange, brightest along the spine, the shoulder and the inside of the thigh, so that the shape is described by its cracks rather than by its outline. The head is a heavy bull-like mass with one lit eye and a short muzzle, and the horns curve back flat against the skull.
Against that, one small cold star. At the top of the raised staff a white-blue burst of light throws hard rays in every direction, and it is the only cool colour on the canvas. It lights the underside of the hat brim, the shoulders and the front of the robes, and it reaches no further: the ground the figure is standing on falls away into brown darkness within a few feet of him.
He is painted mostly from behind, which is unusual for this scene and much better. There is no face to read, no defiant expression, nothing but a stooped back, a raised arm and a great deal of weather coming toward him, and the viewer is left standing behind his shoulder rather than watching from the stalls.
The words spoken here name the creature's origin rather than its species. It is called a flame out of the deep places, the fortress-hell of the first dark power, an address rather than a title, and the old man opposite claims a different and older fire for himself. The whole confrontation is two beings arguing about which of them the fire belongs to.
