Galactus Towers as Iron Man Fires From the Clouds — Print & Oil Painting

This is the least saturated canvas in the Galactus group and the artist has built the whole image out of that restraint. Cloud fills the frame from edge to edge in warm greys, dove and pale gold, a hazy sun burns somewhere behind the upper right, and almost every colour in the picture has been pulled back toward neutral.

He occupies the right two thirds, seen from the chest up and turned three quarters away. The armour is machined rather than sculpted: banded plates, exposed cabling at the shoulder joint, hexagonal fittings, and small violet lamps set into the chest and the collar at regular intervals. The face is a heavy human one with a broad jaw and the eyes lit a dull amber. His right forearm is raised and the prongs of the helmet cut across the sky above.

Away to the left, tiny, there is a second figure. Red and gold armour, arms swept back, and from it a straight white and gold beam runs off the left edge of the frame. He is perhaps a fortieth of the height of the thing he is aiming at, and the artist has painted him at a scale where the individual plates of his own suit are no longer resolvable.

The composition refuses to make that a duel. The two figures are not on the same plane, the beam does not visibly reach anything, and the giant is not looking at the small one. Whatever is happening on the left is happening below the threshold of the picture on the right.

Beams have never been the answer to this problem. The one occasion he was made to leave a world alone, it was because a device retrieved from his own vessel was pointed at him, a thing that erases a target from existence outright rather than damaging it, and he withdrew rather than test whether the person holding it meant it. Nothing that fires a bright line has ever worked.
