Hulk Leaps Forward in a Comic-Style Burst — Print & Oil Painting

The background is a starburst and it does the work of a camera. Dozens of long brown and orange rays radiate from a dark point behind his shoulder out to every edge, tapering as they go, and where they run behind an arm the artist has simply broken them, so the whole surface reads as motion before a single limb has been examined.

He comes at us on the diagonal and low. The right arm is cocked back and up so the fist reaches the top left corner, the left arm is thrown forward with an enormous open hand, the near leg is folded under the body and the far foot is still on the ground, pushing off a small cloud of dust at the bottom edge. Torn magenta shorts are the only remaining clothing.

The drawing is modern comic work and it is confident. Contours are inked at varying weight, the musculature is described with a few decisive lines rather than with rendering, the colour is laid in flat with one darker green for shadow, and the face is compressed into a scowl with the teeth clenched rather than bared. Red leads the measurement with orange second, and that is entirely the background.

The comic behind this idiom nearly did not happen. The title launched in 1962 and was cancelled after six issues for poor sales, and the character came back a year and a half later not with a book of his own but as half of somebody else's anthology, sharing the pages with another hero, and had to wait until 1968 for the cover to carry his name again.
