Iron Man Mark 85 Walks Forward with Wings Extended — Print & Oil Painting

Six flat blades stand out of his back, three to a side, angled up and outward like the vanes of something in the act of opening. They are dark grey with red edges and a hard specular line down each one, and they are the only part of the figure that reads as machinery rather than as a body.

He is walking, not flying and not posing. Both legs are caught mid stride, the weight is coming forward onto the near foot, the arms hang a little away from the sides, and a small blue disc is lit in each open palm. He is coming out of shallow standing water and the surface of it is broken around his shins.

The armour has been modelled as one continuous form. Crimson over dark gold, the plating following the muscle rather than dividing it, a white triangle burning at the sternum, cold blue seams running down the flanks and the thighs, and the eye slits lit the same blue with a thin red mouth line beneath them.

The whole space is cold and unresolved. Blue grey vapour fills the lower half, a large faint ring of light hangs in the upper right without ever explaining itself, and small pale particles drift across the frame at several depths. Cyan leads the measurement with blue behind it and the brightness stays low.

The thing missing from a picture like this is the voice. The suit has always been flown with the help of a system that answers out loud, reads the instruments and argues about the plan, and the name it carries is a memorial: the family employed a butler for decades, and the machine was named after him by the man who built it. An armour walking out of the water on its own is the half of that arrangement you can photograph.
