About this artwork
Take the rank away and this is what is left. No white tunic, no gold, no fleet: a dark quilted coat with the collar turned up, a brown leather pauldron strapped over one shoulder, a matching vambrace on that same forearm, and a broad belt closed with a heavy square buckle. The hair is long enough to fall across the brow and has not been combed for any occasion.
Two loops of fine chain cross the chest, and hanging from them is a small collection of objects: a tapered fang, an X-shaped charm, a short cylinder, a thin blade-like tag. They are too irregular to be insignia and they hang at all the wrong angles. The painting offers them without a word of explanation, which is most of their effect.
This is by a clear margin the darkest of the four Thrawn canvases and the lowest in contrast. The ground is charcoal, scored with rough black strokes that could be torn cloth or could be scorching, and the figure separates from it by only a few values. Even the blue of the skin has been pulled down towards grey. Only the face and the brass of the chain hold any light at all.
The eyes are half-lidded, the head tipped forward, the hands nowhere in the frame. That is the whole distance between this piece and the official portraits: those show a man in command of a room, and this one shows him with nothing on him that anybody issued.
