Obi-Wan Kenobi Reaches Out in Clone Wars Armor — Print & Oil Painting

Obi-Wan has been caught between two lives here, and the costume says it before the face does. Over the coarse Jedi tunic he wears the plated pauldron and gauntlet of a Clone Wars general — utilitarian, scuffed, stamped out of the same foundry as the armour of the men he commands. A monk dressed for a war he never wanted.

The artist has built the whole image out of one light source. The blade is ignited low on the left, and everything the picture knows about form comes from it: the underside of the jaw, the ridge of the brow, the rim of the shoulder plate, the wet edges of the rock. Beyond its reach the canyon collapses into blue-black, so the figure sits in a pocket of light with no visible way out.

The pose is defensive, not heroic. Blade angled down and across the body, the free hand open at shoulder height with the fingers spread — the gesture a Jedi makes to hold something back rather than to strike. His weight is on the back foot. He is listening.

The palette is almost entirely cool: slate, indigo, wet stone. Only the skin and the leather belt carry any warmth, which is why the face reads so strongly against the rock. It sits in our Star Wars collection, and makes a natural pair with the Geonosis-era portrait where the same man is painted against fire instead of stone.
