Here the uniform is the subject. The figure is cropped at the waist, turned a few degrees off square, and dressed in the white double-breasted tunic of the fleet's highest rank: gold boards squared across both shoulders, a small rectangular plaque of coloured blocks at the left breast, white gloves to the wrist. It is the brightest object on the canvas by a wide margin.

The gesture is the hinge of the whole thing. His right hand is raised to jaw height, the glove loosely closed, knuckles turned inward and not quite touching the cheek, a hand halted on its way somewhere. Nothing else about the figure moves. That single raised fist costs the composition its symmetry and hands it a diagonal instead, running up through the eyes to the top corner.

The background has been kept deliberately poor: charcoal grey, a darker vertical band behind one shoulder, a smear of dull red low on the right. It exists to hold the white, and it does. Value organises this picture from top to bottom: white tunic, mid-blue skin, black hair, near-black ground, in that order. The eyes are the only place any real colour is spent.

It is worth noticing how little the face contributes. Mouth closed, brow level, gaze parked somewhere past the viewer's shoulder. The entire idea of the portrait sits in a raised fist that has not yet decided what it is for.
