About this artwork
A tall frame with two people stacked in it rather than lined up. Anakin holds the upper half, set back and turned three-quarters away, looking off past the left edge. Ahsoka has the lower half, much closer to us, her shoulder and back towards the viewer and her chin turned so that she looks straight out. Neither of them is looking at the other, and neither is looking at the same thing.
Behind both runs a wall of pale vertical slots, a corridor panel lit from within, each opening rounded at both ends and spaced like the lines of a stave. It is the only pattern in the picture and the artist uses it as a ruler: his head sits against the tallest bar, her montrals cross three of them, and the whole composition is measured off that grid.
The two costumes are worth reading against each other. He wears a dark tunic with a plated shoulder guard, a heavy belt and the sleeve of an outer robe: the campaigning version of the Jedi habit. She wears almost nothing by comparison: a plain maroon band and bare shoulders, with the striped montrals and head-tails carrying all the visual weight the clothing declines to.
Two pale blue blades enter the lower corners of the canvas, one from each of them, angled down and away and both cut off by the frame. The weapons are lit; the faces are doing nothing about it. The picture holds the pair at the point where the master is still the more armoured of the two and the apprentice is still standing in front of him.
